European Capital of Culture 2009
When the European Union had to choose the first European Capital of Culture from one of the ‘new’ EU member states, Vilnius must have been an easy choice.
The year 2009 has been special not only for Vilnius but also for the rest of the country: Lithuania celebrated its millenium anniversary, as the name Lithuania was first mentioned in the monastic annals Annales Quedlinburgensis (or Annals of Quedlinburg) in 1009.
For 2009 a packed programme covering visual arts, film, music, theatre and literature has been put together; a number of international seminaries and events took place in Vilnius too.
Naturally, the annual Vilnius events such as Sacred Music Festival or Vilnius Opera Festival got an extra rich programme during that year.
Despite the economic recession that obviously must have impact on resourses for cultural life, Vilnius had had a good year.
